You may find examples of LM317 being used as switching regulator in the datasheet here **broken link removed**. Go to page 9 of the doc, 2 examples given.
Hi Picstudent,
Can you get the HV version of LM317 (LM317HV)? It can be configured as switching regulator as shown in the datasheet. Also, the bonus in the app example is higher current handling capability with external driving element.

Hi Kip,
Firstly I suggest you try to find out the transistor type NPN or PNP. Hopefully on one of the unit you have you can still find a good junction (BE or BC) on the transistor. Once you have determine the type then selection for substitute becomes easier.

temperature measurement +forward voltage +led
Hi Kender,
I think you are trying to use an LED as a stable light source for monitoring the state of some equipments. Yes, it may work by the method you mentioned. However you have to ensure the environmental temperature is also controlled over time...
Another is to use the simple standalone universal phone charger. The good part is that the contacts are adjustable to fit your type of battery. I think you should be able to find it in places like ebay.
Here's an example:

I evaluated it before but never actually use it. It seems easy to use esp. customizing it to your application, I use RS232 interface to the chip. It's actually a PIC under the label.
PIC18F452 to 16bit DAC
Hi,
I have a board with 16bit DAC (BB DAC71-CSB-V) that I want to interface using PIC18F452. How do I output a two's complement 16bit command to the IO?
Pls help. Thx
