The Mitra´s book (digital signal processing. a computer based approach) is an excellent book. Matlab is used to support your understanding of the important concepts through an ongoing difficult collection of examples and exercises.

A few years ago I used PIA, it was a quite simple, easy to to use and at the same time powerfool tool, mainly for non initiated people.
Re: Transistor
I think it's too clear from previous posts. An input current, the base current in the common emmitter stage is the parameter that makes the output variable, the collector current goes up or low. So the collector current follows the variations the input (base) current dictates.
