[PIC] why we use AT+CNMI?? commands

Please help me why the commands such as
AT+CNMI=1,2,0,0,0
AT+CNMI=2,2,0,0,0
AT+CNMI=2,1,0,0,0
AT+CNMI=1,1,0,0,0 are used..? plz reply with explanation..
