if DSP algorithms & applications can be run on FPGA, as is the current trend then why DSP processors are used..... in other words can we replace dsp processors by FPGAs as DSP is going on the FPGA.

you are not replacing DSP with FPGA, you are running DSP algorithms on FPGA when you need higher performance... IN some cases DSP is way better thsn FPGA, ie DTMF decoding, because that can be done on small cheap DSP, where FPGA will cost you few dollars and headeche to boot up and etc...
Cost is the biggest factor, and the reprogrammability. FPGAs are not as flexible as the DSPs and are a bit expensive if you have to implement good algorithms. DSPs are cheaper, easier to re-program. By re-programming i mean the ease with which the same system can be used for an altogether different application. DSps are giving tough competition with a lot hardware which comes as built-in. Eg: the SHARC with lots of audio codecs in H/w....
