Why do we choose 1.5b for pipeline ADC?

hi,
in the pipeline adc, 1.5b is in, why we always choose 1.5b, compared with 2b, what is the advatages? thanks . any paper?
 

thomas cho low power low voltage

for error correction we use 1.5b ....

Cascade of 1.5b pipeline ADC includes only 2 comparators, but cascade of 2b pipeline ADC includes 3 comparators.

a very useful document about that is the Thomas Cho's Phd Thesis entitled "Low-Power Low-Voltage Analog-to-Digital Conversion Techniques using Pipelined Architecures".
Unfortunately it is hard to find for download.
