Why ATM break all traffic into 53-Byte Cells?

Hello every body,
I have a question about ATM Cell Length.
Why ATM break all traffic into 53-Byte Cells??
Is there any relationship between network efficiency and this Cell Length?
How does they reach to 53-Byte Cells??
Have you any graph that represent this relationship?

53 byte= 48byte data + 5 byte overhead.

well, 53 byte packet is ATM style to send data.

ATM cells have very small overhead cause they use what is called 'label switching or virtual circuit' as a special form of packet switching, in which the overhead is only labels of 5 bytes. ofcourse smaller overhead is better. here is a figure that might be useful.

no it is not about effiency or something else. when atm was widely using they couldnt decide about the length ; Europe was using 32 byte Usa was using 64 byte so they decided to find a midway (32+64)/2 =48+5byte header.

ATM cell length is hardly related to efficiency, they are so small because it make possible for switch to manipulate and translate it without buffering.

europe chose 32 bytes because of diameter of it's network, US chose 64 bytes due to longer diameter, so the standard picked the mean.
