Why are SMT inductor pads such a strange shape?

Hello,

SMT inductor pads are a strange shape in the SRU2009-100Y inductor.......
..........
https://www.bourns.com/data/global/pdfs/SRU2009.pdf

...why are they this strange shape?......is it to reduce eddy current heating of the pad?

..also, how do you draw this pad in EAGLE pro layout software?

There are 2 pad shapes recommended. Normal rectangular, and strange moon-shape.
Imo the strange shape just replicates the inductor pad shapes, and allow's a larger area for soldering, nothing to do with anything else.

Creating such a shape in Eagle should be straightforward... just check with your local guru.

cheers!

EAGLE 6 apparently allows shaped pads.
For a long time it has been an annoying "feature gap" in EAGLE. There were semi-workarounds but
looks like EAGLE 6 may finally have resolved it.
