Where did people get the helpful, please click button from?

It is on almost all posts except

1. certain forums (such as this one)
2. you won't see it on your own posts - it is for other people to say it is helpful
3. the first post of a thread won't have it
4. you probably have to be logged in as well.

Do you mean that it appears automatically and I need not change any preferences for that?

You don't need to do anything - it should be there as long as you are logged in (but not on the 'off topic' forum - have a look at the others).
