Where should be the load current is checked - At motor end, at output of drive (VFD / Inverter) or at incomer to the drive (input supply to the drive) ?
In a set-up where motor is connected with the VFD to control its speed, its frequency etc.
you have two loads in effect, So the first is the input to the VFD, this takes MORE power then the load (load power + losses). The second is the motor. So you might have 230 @ 40A going into a VFD and 415 V three phase at 6A/phase coming out.

VFD's output voltage is PWM sinewave, but the output current gets real sinewave due to the motor's inductance. So there is no problem to measure current at the motor. Measuring current at the motor (VFD's output) using clamp meter is a common practice.
