When to use isolator in motor control?

I am plan to DIY an motor driver module which can control the motor speed. I see many people use isolator such as optocoupler between their MCU and L298N. Shall we always use isolator between the MCU and the driver IC? Or more recent dirver IC such as DRV8842 or MC33932 donot need it?
