Significant.

With respect to C compilers compatible with MPLAB, they each require a different compiler, except if using Microchip's latest compiler, XC8, which support both devices.

With respect to C coding techniques, while they both share many similar attributes, the PIC18F4550 offers considerably more features, including a USB module, hence can be a more complex device to program.
