is it the same thing with different expression?
thanks!

phase noise is for phase domain,
jitter is for time domain,
they can convert to each other in some condiction.
you can get more information in the attachment.

thanks, i think it's helpful.
what condition is the phase noise used?
what condition is the jitter used?
I know jitter requirement is prefered in switch capacitor. why not phase noise?

hi,
as i know, jitter and phase noise are used to describe a phenomenon that a pure signal is disturbed by noise in the ckt.
jitter describes a statistical property of an analog signal perturbed by “noise” in time domain. (including timing jitter& phase jitter).
Phase noise describes a statistical property of an analog signal perturbed by “noise” in frequency domain.
Phase noise characterizes the short-term instabilities of an oscillator in the terms of the single sideband noise spectral density (dBc/Hz).
in the wireless transceiver design, phase noise is ussually used for simplicity.
while for some clock generation design, jitter is used.

good luck.

that's bacause the signals are managed in frequency domain, and some spec parameters are given in frequency domain too, such as frequency resolution, spur,
and ..
good luck

thanks. i think i get it. it's only different domain expression.

Usually, in RF circuit, we use phase noise. in broadband cirucit, we prefer to use jitter (check the eyediagram)

phase noise is a metric in frequency domain and jitter is in time domain.
