somebody plz explain me (in detail) what is jitter??and what is its effect on digital communication?

real clock ______|<-->|--hi-|<-->|____|<-->|--hi--|<-->|_____

............................clock edges move in time domain relative to ideal.


effects - digital distortion
receiver must be able to read distorted signal and correct for time errors.
