what is bits/hertz what is it used for?

what is bits

the situation sounds like this:
for transmitting 100 digitized voice channels using a pass-band channel of 20 khz, what should be the ratio of bits/hz if we use no guard band???

pls help me to resolve this problem
 

i think thats band width efficiency...jus chek it out.....
