I am doing a project on Image Processing and the main topic of discussion is about Sparse Color Interest Point Detection which is then used to group images from a database. What I don't understand is the jargon Sparse Color. It would be very helpful if someone could clarify the meaning of this term.

Thanks in Advance.

It seems to mean using a small sample of colors rather than the full spectrum for determining interest points. The focus is generally on using other techniques to do the heavy lifting or bulk of the interest point detection but using some color information as well in the detection. For example only using the colors that occur most in an image. This article might help.

"In general, interest points are based on luminance, and color has been largely ignored. However, the use of color increases the distinctiveness of interest points. The use of color may therefore provide selective search reducing the total number of interest points used for image matching"

Thanks a lot Ried.It was very helpful.
