I had seen the components graded as automotive grade. What does it mean and how these components are differrenct than other grade components? I know there temperarure range used to be more, but what are the other criteria?

The automotive environment is hard on electronics. Automotive grade components must withstand extreme temperature ranges, high physical stress, voltage spikes, reverse voltages, wide-band electrical noise, and fail-safety design. ST Electronics has an app note on automotive electrical environment. I'll add it if I can find it.

Automotive grades determine in what applications devices can be used and the process for achieving these grades is complex. All automotive-grade components are created equal. The automotive electronics council has defined three critical grade levels to differentiate components.
