This is a verry complex question.
Anyway i will describe you "the diferential" method to give you a hint.
Supose you want to check haw the signal will be distorted thru a bad comunication chanel.
For that you need another "allmost perfect" (reference) comunication chanel (realized whith optic fiber for example)
You will enter the input signal x(t) thru both chanels and you will record the output at both chanels: y1(t) and y2(t)
By ploting y1(t)-y2(t) you will get the absolute error introduced by your "bad " chanel relative to the "reference" chanel.
This error contain all informations about your signal integrity thru the "bad" comunication chanel
