video compression basics

Hi all,

I wanted to learn video compression mpeg2 but the problem is i have no idea where to start.
Do I need to learn DSP prior to learning video compression or can i start directly on video compression techniques? I have some knowledge on matlab? Do i need to be proficient in MATLAB?

I have TI code composer studio software. Is it sufficient for programming or do i need any other tools?

Can anyone refer good books in video compression.

try this:
mpeg compression with matlab
this is the implementation of mpeg2 compression for doing streaming over internet (streaming over IP is not implemented yet) this code might be difficult to understand bcz very little commentshave been made.
as you will run it video file will be produced.
some kind of noise appears i have no idea from where this noise is coming. i will be grateful if somebody can sort that out. code has only been implemented uptil quantization part.
