Using wireless anti-static strip

The normal anti-static strip which we can tie on our hand has a wire for grounding. However, I saw some "wireless" anti-static strip.

Is that really useful? Without the grounding wire, how can it conduct the excessive electronic away? What is the theory behind?

Theoretically the electrostatic charges could be dissipated through air, if the air is made conductive by ionizing radiation. A Staticmaster cleaning brush for photographers works with Polonium-210 like that. Still I would not want to keep a piece of radioactive material strapped tightly around my hand for any significant time, especially not the whole day.
