ultrasonic sensor programming

i am working with ultrasonic sensor and arduino .I want to calculate distance using the ultrasonic sensor. arduino and sensor both are working but my problem is variation of distance is not linear in serial monitor....the readings are regularly changing. i want to have a more efficent distance calculation formula.
please help

you have to use some type of filter like kalmans that are highly used while gyros interface

Are you using an SR04 type of a sensor module? If so, its strange that you are not getting steady readings. What range are you looking at?
