Transformer input over voltage

What happens when the primary voltage of a transformer is higher than the rated input voltage? For example, 230/12V transformer, what happens if input voltage exceed 230V .

Thank you!
 

Exceeding the rated voltage by more than 15 or 20 % will cause core saturation, high no-load current and possibly a burned winding.
