Is a transformer similar as an inductor?

Yes, an inductor is a coiled (winding) conductor; a transformer can contain more than one coil usually sharing the same core and then called transformer.

Hi,

please, do an internet search before posting similar questions.

A search on "inductor vs transformer" gives more than 6 million hits. And most hits on the first page give really good informations, definitions, discussions and even videos on this topic.

I have been doing a project that involves SMD components such as the inductor and the transformers. How would I differentiate between the inductor and the transformer when it comes to this types of SMD components?

You need to look at their intended purpose.
You cannot always tell just by looking at them, but if it has only two leads, then it must be a inductor.
If it has more than two leads it can be either a transformer, or a multiple-winding or tapped inductor.

the inductor is a coil in a squirrel shape while transformer is somehow similar to inductor in a sense that a wire is wrounded around the core of transformer just like inductor
