Usualy, thermocouples (TCs) are not very cost-effective temperature sensors, when you need to measure just one temperature (obviously, TCs have lots of other advantages). They can be quite cost-effective, when you need to measure muiltiple temperatures. TCs can be switched with relays, if you need to sense low temperature. Or with solid-state analog switches (e.g. CD4051), if you're working with high temperatures.
