No, this sum = 3V : The Solution text doesn't concern the output swing, but the partitioning of the total available voltage (3V) into the individual transistors' Vds of the branch. Here Vod=Vds_max.
The possible output swing then is the sum of (Vod - Vds_sat) for all transistors in the branch.
