successive approximation register ADC

I have some sort of misunderstanding regarding SAR ADCs. more specifically, when we finally get the digital output (assume 1010) from the analogue input. what does the digital output stands for? does it stand for the amplitude or the frequency of the input signal? I know it is a stupid question but bear with me please :shock:
 

Amplitude - ADCs can't measure frequency.
I'll qualify that by saying it is possible to measure frequency but only by analyzing several ADC measurements and noting the trend in results or running an FFT calculation on them.

The bits may be clocked out of the ADC at a particular frequency but it's still the amplitude they represent.
