I have this stepper motor which i intend to drive with 36V even though its only 6V rated................

("UBB1", Rated Voltage = 6V, 18.5Ohms per phase)

....how can you tell what is the maximum allowable drive voltage for this (above) stepper motor...or indeed, for any stepper motor?

The rated voltage in the said datasheet is valid in constant voltage mode and defined by the maximum power dissipation. In constant current mode, the maximum voltage is mainly limited by the windings isolation strength. For fast stepper motors, voltages up to 100 V or above aren't unusual.

In my opinion, it would be reasonable to append closely related stepper motor questions to the previous thread.
