Start with AVR or Arduino?

Im new in the microcontroller world and know nothing about it yet.
Im going to college in a couple of years.

Im wondering if i should start with Arduino or AVR microcontroller now.


Pros and cons about it is:
Arduino is easier to learn and will be more fun/motivating
but
AVR is really good knowledge to have when getting a job after college, but i will learn some at college

Arduino use mainly the Mega chips and a popular low cost starter board like the UNO is all you need to get going.
It uses C++ language which is close to C but not quite the same
You will find the Arduino site has loads of free software and tutorials of which here is just one
