vs1001

Which is the simplest mp3 codec i can find? My requirements: system simplicity, reduced component count... just play a song!

My idea: I found VLSI Solution VS1001 the most suitable mp3 codec for a standalone mp3 player with very simple functionality.
Where can i find more information or code examples on interfacing VS1001 (or similar) with eeprom via SPI bus?
Is there any way to drive VS10xx (or similar) with a glueless interface to any MCU, or at least the smallest number of components possible?
Do you recommend me any particular MCU to drive VS10xx with the smallest component count?
