"Solder-connect" pads have solder resist between them?

Hello,
On some PCBs there are pads placed very close together, and at production time, assembly staff either link the pads with a solder blob, or leave them unlinked. -The solder blob can of course be removed to un-link the pads. Is it normal to put solder resist inbetween such pads?.....our pads are 3mm by 3mm.

Do you think its ok to have them 0.8mm apart.?..or is it normal to have them closer?

The separation seems too large. I have small 1x1 mm solder jumper pads with 0.2 mm pad-to-pad separation, resulting in a 0.1 mm solder resist feature. For larger (high current) pads, I won't make the separation larger than 0.3 to 0.4 mm.
