laminated transformer design

If the space is not the major concern than which power supply is better smps or step down transformer power supply for 12V,5V 30W. Which is more stable and cost effective.

ml4800 power supply

depends on the current

also depends on whether its above 50W ...cuase then u need power factor correction......and that'd be using type of smps most likely.

If its just a few mA to power some test circuit etc then i suppoise a transformer and diode bridge.....etc ...is ok.
but dont forget , with mains transformer, the output voltage isnt actually regulated.......you'lll need a regulator after it if you want exact voltages.......and that could be linear reg if mA....but again SMPS better if higher.

smps take more time to design.

Linear reg very unefficent but simple and stable.

transformer design smps

So,the output voltage obtained are regulated in SMPS even though the input AC voltages vary. The need is of 50W 12V,5V.

Now is it necessary to filter input AC voltage. Can I use direct 350V dc supply and than convert it to 12V using isolated flyback SMPS.

Which power transistor and switching IC are best suited for 50W application, what about ferrite core transformer design.

How does the current feedback loop works in the SMPS.

Thank You

spms transformer simple

Well at 50W in EU you need power factor correctro front end.

Why not try using say an IR1150 (OCC) continuous mode power factor corrector , or say an L6561 transition mode...

that'll give you an output voltage of ~382V in EU so then u just use a one or two transistor forward converter........and get the outputs off it.

maybe you could use flyback.

if you use say an LT1509, then both PFC and PWM are in the same chip

or say an ML4800 (or is it ML4803?)

current feedback is just an outer loop in CMC's.

the voltage feedabck sets the current sense trip point

As per my experience says, Transformors will always perform better than SMPS supplies when compared to EMI and RFI with Voltage variations. Only disadvantage is the bulkier size and weight. For better performance, you may also have a choice between Torroidal and stacked transformors. SPMS may be choosen only when you have no option but to push a high powered supply in a small place. Cheers

design transfo smps

I'll prefer SMPS when there are huge fluctuations in AC supply 90volts to 270 volts. Transformers are better in noisy conditions.
