I tried to make an interconnection between four computers using a 8-Port switch. i gave IP addresses to all computers / all havining same subnet mask. But they were still not interconected . What could be the reason?

Ip addresses assigned were: 192.168.1.2, 192.168.1.3, 192.168.1.4, 192.168.1.5

Verify the hardware first. Check the following:
1. All connection lights on switch and ethernet card of all 4 pcs are ON showing the ethernet connection is oK
2. The network connection on the PC show connected or disconnected.
If yes then we can proceed to the next step

it is ok till the point u mentioned

Open a command window (Run "CMD") and type from one of the PC.

ping 192.168.1.3

This will test the basic TCP/IP connectivity.

that's where the problem lies, all requests failed

try to disable firewall at your pc, setup as you described should work
did you set c mask? (255.255.255.0)

Does the ping to itself (ping 127.0.0.1) and (ping 192.168.1.2) to the same computer work. If it works and the ping to other computers does not work then you have a problem in cabling or the switch. If the ping to itslef does not work, then you have a problem in software.
