Serial digital data equalization and reception

Why is necesary the equalization of serial data? Why dont just work with the data we receive?
 

because the data received is distorted by the channel, the equalization can cancel the distortion by channel, component, etc. So will get better SNR.
 
But..it would be neccesary in an ASI link with a coaxial wire of 3-4 meters?
