S21 parameter of HJFET

I am doing this project on LNA where my instructor insists I use some resistor in series with the drain to make it more stable...It actually gives a K factor of greater than 1 if I add the resistor (I am doing K-delta test-The Rollet's condition)....My question is why does this decrease S21? Imagine the resistor trapped between drain and port 2.....
