rtos: ucos ii questions

I am new to RTOSs

I have some questions on ucos ii

1- I see it is not free , however there are many threads here advising new users to start with it, so was is free before micrium aquired it or was it always a commercial product ?

by the way there is a site softbox

but I didn't manage to find a download button

2-Several articles talked about a book with a CD but it is not free either

so where can I get the source and the book ?
