Dear ALL

I have 4 microcontrollers that are to be networked with wire length of abt. a thousand feet.
I just want to ask can it be done with RS232C interface? or I shud it be done with RS485?

Re: Question on RS232C

It could be done with RS232 if you really want it, but with RS485 will be much easy. With RS232 you need an addressable daisy chain scheme with an RS232 transciever and two RS232 connectors on every board.

Re: Question on RS232C

You can use the serial communication port implemented in th uC units and use the SN75176 chip from national semiconductors as an RS485 transceiver. this approach can cover up to 1200 m (witn a maximum of 300 bps).

Hope this helps.

Re: Question on RS232C

what abt the external noise tolarence?

RS485 uses "differential" signal which is reasonably noise immune.

Re: Question on RS232C

Hi
Look the distance of communication for rs232 is dependent of baud rate
the for example you can communicat at 9600 for about 100m,and at 2400 may be
around 300m
if you need more than this distance you must chang to rs485

Re: Question on RS232C

RS485 is best choice

Re: Question on RS232C

HI
I think RS485 is a better choise. It is more convient for large distances.

Question on RS232C

you can use RS485

Question on RS232C

see AN on rs485 and rs422

Question on RS232C

CAN (Controller Area Network) if you don't mind the higher cost.
CAN-open and CAN-kingdowm are good bet.

Re: Question on RS232C

WHEN U WANT COMMUNICATION BETWEEN 4 CONTROLLERS THEN THE BEST OPTION IS RS-485

Check this ---> h**p://www.echip.co.in/rs232.html

RS232 is prone to noise. RS485 is differential driving and immune to common mode noise. You can drive up to 4000 Ft.

Hope this helps.

Cheers
