Rotation counter

Hi all,
I want to count the No of rotations of rotating disk for meter application. It is metal disk.
Can any one Pls tell me very suitable sensor for this work.

If it is possible to drill a hole in the disk, then use a "fork" blok with diode and receiver, the output from the receiver is to be used by the counter.

Eg destroy an old pc-mouse .
