Relay driving problem

You could add a resistor that has the same value as the relay coil resistance then the relay will work properly but the resistor will waste power by getting hot.

Same resistor, because I am doubling applied voltage?
 

With a 24V supply, the relay coil will have 12V across it and the series resistor with the same resistance as the relay coil will also have 12V across it.
