Hey!

I am a student and I am currently working on a project. Therefore I am interested if it would be possible (of course legally) to collect and handle real time traffic information from traffic participants and use them to solve traffic problems (like traffic jams in big cities)?

yes its possible. Use Google and you will find many traffic management systems.

But I am actually interested in new ideas and solutions, which possibly also include all traffic participants in big cities. Can you think of any solution?

There is multiple solutions from basic to advance technology. In basic you can just use sensors that will tell you the traffic congestion on one road. In advance you use the CCTV cameras with image processing.
 

But I think that this is a solution which is already realized.
I would like to know if there are any new and innovative solutions our there, which are not realized yet.
