Hi can anyone explain what is the metal stick sticking out of the screw and what is it for? I found it in a air purifier device.

Most likely a negative ion source.

Some 'purifiers' generate small levels of ozone, claiming it makes the air purer although more likely it produces a slight scent to make people think it does more than it really does.

If that's what it is, it will have a high negative voltage on it, enough that you might see a tiny glow around it in the dark but at a current rating so low it isn't harmful to touch.

Hello lovingdemscience,
It almost looks like a grounding source.
When the unit is fully assembled, does that wire touch any metal?

Hi there,
No it doesn't touch anything. I think betwixt is right on this one, my purifier do have a kind of smell as described by him.
