What are the practical engineering applications of FFT?

FFTs are often used for homework assignments for engineering students. They are used to determine if a student:

1) Knows how to do a search on the web
2) Is so lazy that they can't be bothered with (1) and instead will just post on a forum and hope somebody answers their question.
