power electronics fpga

hi,

i am just confused in choosing the suitable thing.
i am a student preparing for graduation project which will be in
power electronics and drives field. for the control part on a machine
i need a powerful tool to be used either PLC, DSP, or FPGA.
about the FPGA: i am confused of which is suitable for this usage??

i was tending to buy a Virtex IIpro XUP kit from DIGILENTinc. is it good
for that purpose?? and what about the Virtex 5 is their any good price kits
of them(they are soo expensive for me)??

thanks a lot for anyone time.

If you are targetting a retail product, you should consider that a FPGA in a power electronics application surely need some DSP capabilites but probably not highest speed communication. So a lower cost Altera Cyclone or Xilinx Spartan is most likely the best choice. I've been designing mixed processor/FPGA or FPGA standalone solutions with Cyclone II. But also DSP or fast general purpose processor solutions are usual.

thanks a lot for ur reply,

so u mean that it is better to buy a Spartan or Cyclon than Virtex, because
Virtex has a less DSP properities or has a high speed not needed??

thanks
