cnc plasma table

I have a CNC Plasma cutting table. How would I integrate a position sensor on the plasma table control box so that it would sense contact with the metal. This way, it could adjust cutting height before beginning cutting? It has a feature to where it bottoms out on the plate to do this now. But on thin metal that warps badly, the z axis motor pushes the metal down giving a false reading. The new tables sense contact with the metal by barely touching it. It must sense continuity. How would I do this on my machine? I have a PlasmaCam DH1.
