Polynomial mode of solution for a sudoku puzzle

is there any polynomial mode of solution for a sudoku puzzle. i m trying to create a puzzle generator and solver.

i can do it manually, but i do know is ther any standard algorithms (or) mathematical equations for programming purpose.
