If you ask me - I strongly recommend you pick up a good book like Bhasker or Kevin SKahill and read through. BTW - in industry nowadays Verilog (and SystemVerilog) is much more popular and if you are in college - I stringly recommend you do Verilog than VHDL. I always recommend doing examples first. Don't just read the examples: get a notepad (i.e. text editor) and practice writing what you see. "Monkey see monkey do" is priceless. **broken link removed** is a very good place to start. All the circuits on the site are interactive, and they come with VHDL codes and test bench. Start with the basic gates, then walk your way up to latches, etc.
