PIC16F877 and Nokia3310 do I need max232?

PIC16F877 and Nokia3310

Hi guys, i got a simple question... do i need to place a max232 between the PIC and Nokia3310? i want to read messages from the cell phone using microcontroller.

and BTW, i would really appreciate if you guys could help me program the PIC to read SMS using AT commands. I know the AT commands, but i dont know how to start before reading the SMS, like setting the baudrate or anything else.
