well...

the range of oscillators that can be interfaced with it is:

4 M Hz - 12 M Hz

but people use 11.059 Mhz generally ... because it helps in serial communication...

If you are not working in serial communication then you can use 12 MHz. also ...

The maximum capability of atmel's 89s52 is 12M Hz...

so we can use a frequency from 0Hz to 24 Mhz

when the oscillator's frequency is high,the cpu's speed is high,you can choose you oscillator's frequency as you need. usually I us 12MHz and 11.0502MHz. IF the frequency is too high,AT89S52 will be less stable.

For start 12MHZ is best choice

there's a lot when you are selecting the frequency
when the frequency increases,the speed of the system also will increase
byt will increase the power consumption
so select your crystal according to the requirement.

0 to 24 MHz, look the datasheet, some atmel IC can run with 33 MHz but it's not secure

Added after 7 minutes:

11.0592MHz is bether to have a bether baudrate, it's more exact when you use 9600 bps or similar, you can get exactly this value of bps, with 12MHz you can get some % of error but you can comunicate.

but mostly 11.0592 which i always used and preffered due to the calculations easily available in books for 11.0592MHz crystal

first check the chip no , for maximum range there is a no. on chip

for ex
12PI = max'm 12 MHz
24PI = max'm 24 MHz
and also you can not use 24mHz for chip which has 12PI .
