One counter or several conuters??

Dear Sir,

Now, I want to implement a 21-bit counter. I just need to implement it by one 21-bit counter. Or I have better to implement it by three counters, there are two 8-bit counter and one 5-bit counter. Which one is better in area and speed?

Hey IanP, check the forum title before suggesting an off-the-shelf chip!
 

I recommend to use as more as ripple stages to implement the counter in case of the TIMING is not violated.

If your design is runnung at a very low frequency, try more stages. If a higher frequency is needed (e.g. 200MHz), a single stage must be used.
