NMEA protocol message details

hi all ,

I have bought a GPS shield to work with arduino , used Tinygps,
every thing is ok...but the problem is that i want to implement code
by my self i mean not using a ready library so please i want someone to direct me toward message format explanation, the GPS message itself and how the data is put into the protocol and requested from it ...some thing like the standards of the protocol ... can i find this information for free ?
