I suggest you to go with 89c51 simple & easy to start. Don't start directly with PIC it's having lot more features than 89c51, better start with simpler one
the 89c51 is a older version
so try 89s51 from atmel
it contains all the basic peripherals in it and also the s series also have an advantage of ISP i.e you won't be needing an external programmer to burn the IC
and also before trying to learn a controller check for its assistance and the avalability in the market
