what is a hex file+c programming

Hi i'm about to program an Atmega16 microcontroller... i have written the code for the mc in 'c' language now i want to convert the c program to a hex file....does anyone know how to do it and using which program we can do it....
(the program also includes some extension files such as delay.h, io.h etc)
pls help...
